Breaking news

Tucson's heat set a new record high Thursday with 97 degrees — breaking the 94 degrees record for the date set in 1937.

The record high hit at 2:20 p.m. at Tucson International Airport, said Gary Zell, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

The normal high for the date is 81 degrees. Thursday's low was 64 degrees.

Friday's forecast calls for a high of 93 degrees. The record for the date is 94 degrees, which was set in 2007, 1934 and 1902, said Zell. The expected low is 67 degrees.

An unusually strong high pressure over the desert Southwest is keeping the temperatures high, but the pressure is expected to shift east into Texas and Louisiana, said Zell.

This weekend temperatures are expected to be cooler and by Wednesday the high should be about 80 degrees, which is very near normal, Zell said.
