Now that it’s officially October (whew!), it’s about time to make that annual pilgrimage to everyone’s favorite repository of gourds, Brian and Kelly’s pumpkin patch.

The midtown Broadway and Rosemont Boulevard location, which started getting into the Halloween spirit about two weeks ago, just received a diverse shipment this morning of all kinds of squash: blue, orange, green and bumpy in-between.

A recent visit revealed all the usual suspects: hay bales topped with pumpkins of all sizes, gorgeous red ristras of air-dried Hatch chiles, Willcox apples, jars of New Mexico salsa and local Happy Bear honey, picture frames and old timey watering cans. Animal lovers will also be happy to know that Olive the goat is in for the ride, and is looking demure in her brown coat.

Co-owner Brian Sauer says you can expect all of the goodies this year, including face-painters, animals and fresh mini doughnuts (not necessarily in that order), which they’ll be dipping in chocolate and maple syrup.

An Arizona Daily Star piece last year reported that Sauer, a Tucson native, and his wife Kelly started the business in 2007, the same year they got married. The couple source their pumpkins from all over southeastern Arizona and New Mexico. They also have a tree lot in Oregon, where they get much of their product from when the place becomes a Christmas tree store in November.

But now we’re getting ahead of ourselves. It’s not even yet Halloween yet ...
