City High School and the Paulo Freire Freedom School, which share a campus on East Pennington Street downtown, showcased its new urban alley garden Thursday.
Students of those schools worked with architecture and urban planning students from the University of Arizona to create the garden.Β
The project was dubbed, "Sustainable Laboratory + Urban Garden," or SLUG.Β
The garden features structures mounted on the school building's exterior wall. Those structures support several hanging garden beds, where the schools' urban agriculture students are growing anything from basil to chiles.Β
The alleyway garden also has an aquaponics system and several benches where students can hang out and play.
