A. E. Araiza is lifelong Tucsonan and graduate of Pima College and the University of Arizona. Before becoming a photographer, he was a firefighter for the U.S. Forest Service in Coronado National Forest and a substitute teacher. He joined the Arizona Daily Star in 1985 after interning at Newsday in New York. Araiza photographed the devastating Mexico City earthquake. He won a feature-writing award of his family’s cemetery in Cochise County and regularly wins awards in the Arizona Press Club and Associated Press competitions. E-mail: aaraiza@Tucson.com.
