David Watson, 46, who was arrested in connection with the 2000 slaying of Linda Watson and the subsequent killings of her mother and a neighbor, is a veteran of the Tucson Fire Department. The department says Watson has been placed on unpaid leave following his arrest Saturday night on suspicion of three counts of first-degree murder. He has been employed as a firefighter since 1995. He was promoted to captain in 2007, the department said. "The Tucson Fire Department is saddened to learn about the circumstances related to one of our employees. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family of the victims," said Capt. Barrett Baker in a news release. Watson was arrested without incident at his home Saturday evening. He was booked into the Pima County jail.

The Tucson firefighter who was arrested on charges of killing three women between 2000 and 2003 has resigned from the Tucson Fire Department.

David Dwayne Watson, 46, was with Tucson Fire since 1995. He was promoted to captain in 2007, according to Capt. Barrett Baker, a department spokesman.Β

On Saturday, the Pima County Sheriff's Department arrested Watson in connection with the deaths of his ex-wife, Linda Watson, her mother, Marilyn Cox and Cox's friend, ReNΓ©e Farnsworth.

David and Linda Watson were involved in a bitter custody disputer over their daughter, beginning in 1998, court records showed. Linda Watson disappeared from her northwest-side home in August 2000.

Her remains were found in the desert in 2003 and positively identified in 2011.Β

Cox, her mother, was devoted to finding the person that took and killed her daughter. Farnsworth was a close friend of Cox, who her family says wanted to keep Cox safe.

David Watson was placed on unpaid leave following his arrest Saturday.Β

The following Monday, Tucson Fire gave him a notice of intent to discharge, said Baker, the fire department spokesman. In response, he resigned from the department.
