A fatal vehicle collision on the north side involving a on-duty Tucson Police Department officer left a bicyclist dead.
At about 10:15 p.m. Saturday, Officer Alon Hackett was driving a 2012 Nissan Pathfinder, an unmarked city of Tucson vehicle, while working on a surveillance operation in the area near North First Avenue and East Navajo Road, police said .
Hackett was traveling north on First Avenue in the curb lane, police said. A bicyclist, who was identified as 49-year-old Francisco Galvez, was riding east across First Avenue.
Galvez went in front of Hackett and was struck by the right front corner of the vehicle, according to police. He was taken to the University of Arizona Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead “several hours after his arrival,” the news release said.
The police officer was not injured.
The traffic unit and the internal affairs office responded to the scene for an investigation, which the police said is ongoing. A Board of Inquiry is reviewing the circumstances, police said.
Galvez did not appear to have been wearing a helmet, according to police. His bicycle had a front light, which was still on after the collision, and a rear light, which authorities did not know if it was on at the time of the collision.
