Federal marshals took custody of a Tucson fugitive sex offender Tuesday who was captured in Mexico and turned over to authorities at the port of entry in El Paso, Texas.
Manuel Mauro Rivera-Ramirez, 30, was convicted of sexual assault in 2006, according to a U.S. Marshals Service news release. Rivera-Ramirez was convicted of sexually assaulting a woman he knew by forcing her to engage in sexual conduct while she was intoxicated, states the release.
In September 2008, a warrant was issued by the Pima County Superior Court charging Rivera-Ramirez with violating his conditions of probation after absconding from supervision.
In December 2014, authorities determined that Rivera-Ramirez had fled to Mexico and requested the assistance of federal marshals to locate him.
Marshals began working with law enforcement officials in Mexico, and it was discovered that Rivera-Ramirez was working as a juvenile guidance counselor for a church in Ciudad Chihuahua, Mexico, officials said.
On Monday, Rivera-Ramirez was located and detained by Mexican officials. He was transported to Ciudad Juarez and deported by Mexican immigration authorities to El Paso Tuesday where he was transferred to the custody of marshals, said officials.
