An inmate at a federal prison in Tucson was killed Friday in what appears to be an assault, authorities said.

Shortly before 1 p.m., staff at the U.S. Penitentiary discovered an unresponsive inmate, and medical staff initiated life saving measures, said Federal Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman, Meredith Mitstifer.

Paramedics responded and continued life saving efforts until the inmate was pronounced dead, Mitstifer said.

No staff or other inmates were injured in the incident.

The name of the deceased is withheld pending notification of next of kin.Β

The penitentiary is one of three facilities at Tucson's Federal Correctional Complex. It currently houses about 1,600 high security inmates.
