A 30-year-old man riding a bicycle was killed in an early morning crash, authorities said.

Daniel Wilson died at a local hospital after suffering life-threatening injuries after he was struck from behind by a car.

Deputies responded to reports of a collision on West Orange Grove Road west of La Cholla Boulevard shortly before 5:30 a.m., said Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesman Deputy Tracy Suitt.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Wilson was traveling eastbound in the bike lane on Orange Grove approaching La Cholla when he was struck from behind by an eastbound-traveling car merging into the right turn lane, Suitt said.

Although Wilson was not wearing a helmet, his bicycle was equipped with a flashing red rear light. He was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The Sheriff’s Department Traffic Unit is investigating the incident. Neither speed nor impairment appeared to be factors in the collision, according to Suitt.
