A 57-year-old bicyclist was struck and killed by a vehicle late Monday on the south side, Tucson police said.

The bicyclist was identified as William Tolano.

At about 9:30 p.m., officers were sent to the 6200 block of South Nogales Highway south of East Bilby Road for an accident.

Officers found an unresponsive man on the ground and began administering first aid. Paramedics arrived and transported the man with life-threatening injuries to Banner-University Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

Detectives determined the bicyclist was crossing Nogales Highway eastbound south of Bilby. The driver of a 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe that was northbound in the curb lane and struck Tolano as he was crossing.

Tolano was not wearing a helmet. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in teh crash, Tucson police said.
