Abdulmalik Sheikh Omar

UPDATE on Feb. 22, 2019:Β Tucson man found not guilty of sex crimes against a minor

A 55-year-old man was arrested in connection to inappropriately touching a girl who sought help at a Dollar General store south of the city.

Abdulmalik Sheikh Omar turned himself in to detectives and was booked into the Pima County jail on suspicion of sexual abuse, aggravated assault and child molestation, said Deputy Ryan Inglett, a Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesman, on Tuesday.

On Jan. 29 at about 4 p.m., deputies responded to the Dollar General store, 5697 S. Alvernon Way, to a report of a man inappropriately touching a 13-year-old girl, Inglett said.

Deputies learned that the girl was walking near the store when Omar approached her. The girl said she became afraid and went inside the store for help.

Omar followed her into the store where he began inappropriately grabbing her, and the girl sought further help. Omar then fled from the store, Inglett said.

Detectives of the crimes against children unit were assigned to the case. They obtained an arrest warrant for Omar, who turned himself in, after speaking to detectives over the telephone, said Inglett. Β Β
