Border Patrol agents seized two horses being used to smuggle packs of marijuana across the border near Sasabe on Sunday night.

Customs and Border Protection said agents using surveillance cameras observed two individuals on horseback illegally crossing the border. Agents in the field and an Air and Marine Operations helicopter were notified.

The two smugglers continued northbound until they heard the helicopter approaching at which time they got off the horses and ran back across the border into Mexico, the agency said in a news release.

Agents discovered the horses were carrying about 100 pounds of marijuana, worth about $48,000. The horses were turned over to the Arizona Department of Agriculture.
