Pueblo Politics: Poll finds most Americans don’t blame shooting on political tone

A CBS News poll says 57 percent of American’s don’t think the recent political tone had anything to do with Saturday’s shooting in Tucson.

The poll, released Tuesday, shows 32 percent of the 673 people polled think the tone does have something to do with the shooting that left six dead and 13 wounded at a Congress on Your Corner event, hosted by U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. Giffords remains in critical condition in an intensive care unit in Tucson. She is recovering from a gunshot wound to the head.

The poll results show a contrast when broken down by party: 19 percent of Republicans said the political tone had something to do with the shooting, while 42 percent of Democrats said the same. Independents fell between the two parties, with 33 percent of saying the tragedy had something to do with the harsh political tone.

Respondents were contacted by telephone Jan. 9 and 10. The margin of error is 4 percent.
