Oro Valley closed on a controversial deal to buy a country club and golf courses for $1 million from HSL Properties.
Town officials signed a purchase agreement Wednesday. An appraisal previously showed the market value of the property is $3.25 million.
The town plans to turn El Conquistador Country Club, 10555 N. La Caรฑada Drive, into a community center and recreation center.
The facilities help the town meet the communityโs longtime desire for a central gathering place, Mayor Satish Hiremath said in a press release.
Critics of the purchase, however, are circulating recall petitions to remove the mayor and three Town Council members who supported the purchase.
The Town Council will get detailed information on the costs to buy, operate and improve the center at a study session meeting at 4:30 p.m. next Wednesday.
A grand opening and ribbon-cutting celebration is planned for noon to 3 p.m. May 2. The public can use the driving range and swimming pools, and get tennis lessons all for free during the event.
Tucson-based HSL Properties previously bought the Hilton El Conquistador resort for $15 million in December and sought to split off the country club and its 45 holes of golf and sell them to the town.
