2016 election: U.S. Senate

Candidates for U.S. Senate, Arizona: From left, Kelli Ward, John McCain, Ann Kirkpatrick, Alex Meluskey.

Republican Senate candidate Alex Meluskey has suspended his campaign, noting he is not in a position to win in a four-way primary.

"I made it very clear from the outset that if I was not in a position to win this race, I would do what is best for our state, and for our country, and step aside before voting began," he wrote into an email to supporters.Β

The radio host did not endorse any of his Republican rivals, but still was critical of Senator John McCain in a video posted to YouTube and said he wanted to see him defeated at the polls.Β

"This is not an end but simply another beginning," he said in his short video.

His exit leaves three Republicans still in the race: former State Senator Kelli Ward, radio host Clair Van Steenwyk and McCain.
