Ad Watch: Mailer suggests under Kyrsten Sinema, Phoenix could get nuked

A new mailer arriving in mailboxes today from a Super PAC with ties to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and GOP adviser Karl Rove is attacking Kyrsten Sinema on statements she made in 2002 about Luke Air Force Base.

The unusual mailer uses a lenticular design that shows Phoenix being destroyed by a nuclear attack, with the image changing when the photo is tilted slightly.

The ad notes Sinema — who is in a tight race for Senate against Tucson Rep. Martha McSally — told the Arizona Republic newspaper in 2002 that she did not support keeping Luke Air Force Base open.

A spokesperson for the group behind the letter, DefendArizona, said it reflects that Sinema's record on supporting the Phoenix-area base.

"Kyrsten Sinema has shown that she can't be trusted. She advocated for closing down Luke Air Force base which is a strategic part of our national defense," said DefendArizona spokesman Barrett Marson.

The Sinema campaign spokesperson dismissed the ads as ridiculous, saying that the McSally campaign should denounce the mailer immediately.

“This mailer is another example of why Arizona newspapers said Congresswoman McSally is stuck in a ‘downward spiral,’" said Helen Hare, Sinema for Arizona spokeswoman. "We would ask Congresswoman McSally to denounce these tactics, but we know she won’t because she’s the kind of politician who will say anything to get elected. As McSally becomes increasingly desperate, Kyrsten’s campaign will remain focused on the issues Arizonans actually care about.”

Hare said the ad doesn't focus on the numerous votes that the Phoenix Congresswoman cast in support of the air base.
