The Arizona Department of Health Services has now reported more than 3,100 coronavirus cases on back-to-back days with its latest update. Β
With 3,109 new cases, the statewide total is 49,798, the department said Saturday in its daily tally. The total number includes people who have recovered.
The state said 1,338 people in Arizona have died from COVID-19. There were 26 new deaths reported today.
Across Pima County, 5,313 cases of coronavirus have now been confirmed, up 294 cases from the day before.
Among the confirmed COVID-19 cases in Pima County:
β’ 972 people ages 65 and older;
β’ 709 people between 55 and 64 years old;
β’ 810 people between 45 and 54 years old;
β’ 2,352 people between 20 and 44 years old;
β’ 465 people 19 years old and younger.
No age was available for five coronavirus patients in the county.
There have been 242 known COVID-19 deaths in the Tucson-metro area, according to the state health department. Two new deaths were reported in Pima County today.
There have been 549,274 coronavirus tests given across Arizona, with 16,577 tests reported yesterday.
Among the tests given statewide, 8% of them are showing positive for COVID-19, the state said. A week ago, 6.7% of statewide tests showed positive.
The 1,338 confirmed COVID-19 deaths in Arizona include:
β’ 1,007 people 65 years old and older;
β’ 173 people between 55 and 64 years old;
β’ 82 people between 45 and 54 years old;
β’ 70 people between 20 and 44 years old.
β’ 6 people under the age of 20
The coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough, for most people. For some people who contract the virus, especially those who are older or have underlying health conditions, it can cause more severe illness and death. The vast majority of people who are diagnosed with COVID-19 recover.

Many people visit Tumamoc Hill during the first day of Tumamoc's re-opening in Tucson, Ariz. on May 25, 2020. After being closed due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Tumamoc Hill re-opened with some modifications. There are hand sanitizer stations throughout the hike to the top as well as arrows, spaced 10-ft apart, lined up and down the hill. Some runners, hikers and walkers are also wearing masks during their hike. "The steps we are taking aim to provide our community with needed exercise, connection to our beautiful desert and a sense of comfort in such a trying time, while balancing the fact that gathering as a community endangers each of us and our loved ones. This is an unprecedented challenge that we are taking extremely seriously," said Benjamin T. Wilder, director of Tumamoc Hill. Visitors are also asked to limit their group to three people and to not touch the gate at the top of the hill- a tradition for some who make it to the top. "This is a time when we need to establish new traditions and adapt in a creative manner that embraces empathy, unity, care and patience," Wilder said.

Macias, known as The Desert Pen, has been working on her clients mural for the past three months. "It's the one thing I love, I have a passion for and the only thing I could be happy doing," said Macias. The mural represents her client, a single mother of four who works in the health care field. One half of the mural is dedicated to the connection between mothers and their children. The other half is dedicated to the connection between nurses and patients. The client wanted some positivity in the mural to show how nurses give a piece of themselves to their patients hence the puzzle pieces in the nurse and the patients, said Macias.
