U.S. Rep. Juan Ciscomani has won his GOP primary against opponent Kathleen Winn, according to the Associated Press's projections.Β
The early vote totals from within Arizona's 6th Congressional District have Ciscomani up 65% compared to Winn's 35%. Just 5% of the precincts have reported so far.Β AP called the race at 8:26 p.m.
Winn, who lost to Ciscomani in the GOP primary for the same seat in 2022, is considered a longshot candidate, with far less campaign money raised than in the incumbent.Β
Ciscomani is a freshman incumbent representing District 6, which includes eastern Pima County, including most of Tucson, and most of Cochise County.
The Republican primary winner will face Democrat Kirsten Engel in the November general election.
Winn has portrayed herself as more conservative than Ciscomani, whom sheβs criticized as too bipartisan.
βEverything Juan has voted on with the Democrats, heβs not getting them to give anything up,β Winn told the Star. βThatβs not true bipartisanship. Thatβs not a compromise. That, some people would say, is a sellout.β
Ciscomani says his ability to find common ground with Democrats is a strength, not a weakness. He said heβs proud to have been ranked the most bipartisan member of Arizonaβs House delegation in a May analysis from the Lugar Center and Georgetown University McCourt School of Public Policyβs Bipartisan Index.
