Fatal rollover near Mission and Ajo

A Gary's Towing worker readies to remove a wrecked pickup truck from a wash near South Mission and West Ajo Way on Jan. 16, 2018, in Tucson, Ariz. A pickup truck ended up on its roof in the wash east of the intersection, killing one.

Police have identified the victim of Tuesday's fatal car crash on the southwest side of town.

Guy Hanft Jr., 60, was pronounced deceased at the scene, after police responded to reports of a rollover crash involving a single vehicle in the area of West Ajo Way and South Mission Road, Sgt. Christopher Hawkins, a Tucson Police Department spokesman, said in a news release.

At about 9:30 a.m., police and firefighters arrived at the scene to find a gray 1993 Toyota pickup truck in the wash on the north side of Ajo, just east of Mission, Hawkins said.

An adult female was on the ground next to the vehicle and was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Hanft was found inside the vehicle.

Traffic detectives took over the investigation and learned that the pickup was traveling eastbound on Ajo Way in the median lane when it struck the northern curb and rolled into the wash. The woman was thrown from the vehicle.

Speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash and detectives are looking into the possibility of Hanft having suffered a medical issue, Hawkins said.

The woman's condition has improved and she remains in the hospital in stable condition.
