Tucson Water is warning customers of a phone scam after a customer reported receiving a bogus call for payment.

The customer contacted Tucson Water after being called and asked for payment to avoid having her water service shut off, the utility said Monday in a news release.

These types of scams are common, especially during the holiday season, according to the news release. The callers falsely represented themselves as Tucson Water employees and asked for money.

Tucson Water does not ask for payment or financial information from customers by phone.

The policy of Tucson Water is to provide two written notifications of account delinquency or service interruption. The notifications are followed by an automated phone call asking the account holder to contact the utility immediately.

Customers can verify their account and status of service by calling Tucson Water Customer Service at (520) 791-3242 or TWWebAcct1@tucsonaz.gov
