Cross Middle School teacher gets appreciation award
A Cross Middle School teacher has been given an appreciation award from Mister Car Wash.
Desiree Romo, who teaches sixth-grade language arts, was one of 10 teachers across the country honored for being an inspiring teacher.
Romoβs students nominated her for the honor. Mister Car Wash received more than 1,000 nominations.
βMs. Romo inspires me to shine everyday,β one of her students wrote in the nomination.
As part of the award, Romo received a $500 grant for her classroom, which she will use to expand her classroom book collection.
University High student wins leadership award
A University High School student has won an award from the National World War II Museum.
Shaelyn Fones received the Billy Michal Leadership Award, which is part of the museumβs American Spirit Awards.
Fones was recognized for her work writing about veterans at a celebration in New Orleans.
Past recipients of the award include former President George H. W. Bush and actor Tom Hanks.
Catalina High Foundation awards $8K in scholarships
The Catalina High School Foundation gave graduating seniors $8,000 in scholarships and grants.
Five students received $1,000 each in foundation grants. They are Tennyson Aaronson-Glaab, Asmaa Amin, Ernesto Lopez-Ascencio, Khalid Saleem and Bryan Wright.
Osama Madlol received $1,000 as part of the Eva Royce Foreign Language scholarship. Jessica Welch received the $1,000 McKeever Business and Entrepreneur scholarship, and Lainie Lopez was awarded the $1,000 McCraren Construction Trades scholarship.
Additionally, Jack Draper was named teacher of the year and Yesenia Larios, student of the year.
TUSD serving free summer meals to children ages 2-18
The Tucson Unified School District is providing free meals to children ages 2 to 18 until July 21.
Adults accompanying children can eat breakfast for $2 and lunch for $3.
