Police are investigating a homicide on the south side, after a 911 caller reported a body on fire in the alley, authorities said.

Shortly before 8 a.m., a resident was driving past an alley near the 3000 block ofΒ East Coconino Vista, when he saw a small fire. Once he got closer, the man realized it was a body and called 911, said Sgt. Pete Dugan, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.

Police arrived at the scene in minutes and immediately put out the fire with an extinguisher. He was then able to confirm that it was a body and the person was pronounced deceased, Dugan said.

Homicide detectives arrived to continue the investigation, which is in the early stages. They are in the process of trying to identify the victim and find out what happened, Dugan said.

A medical examination will be necessary to determine the cause of death, Dugan said.

Police are asking that anyone with information about the incident call 911 or 88-CRIME, should they wish to remain anonymous.
