Pima County Superior Court

For those who don't work in the criminal justice system, it can be something of a mystery.

The Pima County Attorney's Office aims to unravel some of that mystery during its Citizens Prosecution Academy, which is once again accepting applications for classes starting Feb. 28.

During the academy, which is free and open to the public, people will be introduced to the inner workings of the criminal justice system, law enforcement and the county attorney's office, with opportunities to visit the Tucson Police Department crime lab, Piima County jail, Pima County juvenile detention center and the state prison, according to a news release from the county attorney's office.

Participants will hear from speakers with the county attorney's office and the TPD crime lab, who will discuss topics such as cold case homicides, the "CSI Effect" and prosecuting sexually violent predators, the release said.

Prosecutors with the county attorney's office will also participate in the academy, covering topics including narcotics, gangs, firearms, witness protection, internet crimes against children, sex crimes, stalking and domestic violence, according to the release.

Classes will be held for four weeks on Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Tucson Police Department west side service center, 1310 W. Miracle Mile.

While the program is free, space is limited. Interested parties must fill out an application atΒ www.pcao.pima.gov/prosecutionacademyform.aspx by Feb. 16.
