Angel Mendoza

A 52-year-old man was seriously injured after he was hit by a car multiple times, following an argument with an acquaintance on the north side, police said.

Detectives responded to the 300 block of East Pastime Road, and learned that an argument between the victim and suspect had broken out in an apartment and carried out into the street, said Sgt. Kimberly Bay, a Tucson Police Department spokeswoman.

The suspect, 23-year-old Angel Mendoza, got into his vehicle, almost hitting the victim as he left the area, Bay said.

The victim stayed outside, yelling at the suspect to leave, at which point the vehicle turned around and unsuccessfully attemptedΒ to hit the victim, Bay said.

The suspect returned one more time, hitting the victim with his vehicle multiple times, before getting out and threatening the man with a hammer while he was on the ground, Bay said.

The suspect left the scene, but was apprehended by police a short distance away.

Mendoza has been booked into the Pima County jail and faces charges on three counts of aggravated assault with a dangerous instrument and one count of aggravated assault causing substantial injuries, Bay said.

The victim was transported to the hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
