A 25-year-old woman was killed early Tuesday when the car she was riding slammed into a utility pole on Tucson's south side, police said.
Montana Rose Lujan was a passenger in a 2008 Ford Taurus that crashed into a pole about 2 a.m. in the 5500 block of South 12th Avenue, north of West Drexel Road, Tucson police said in a news release.
The unidentified driver, a 23-year-old woman, was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, the release said.
Investigators say the Ford was traveling north at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control and crashed into the pole. Lujan died at the scene, the release said.
Both Lujan and the driver were wearing seat belts.
Police had not yet determined if impairment was a factor in the crash, but investigators say excessive speed is a known contributing factor.
The investigation continues.
