With the shelter at capacity, Pima Animal Care Center officials have waived adoption fees on all dogs, cats, puppies and kittens through Sunday.

Shelter staff expected an increase in lost pets following the holiday, since many pets are lost every year when they get frightened by fireworks.

Between the morning of July 4 and 4 p.m. on July 5, PACC took in 50 pets and its Pet Support Center took dozens of lost and found reports from community members, according to a news release.

As part of the "Meowt of Room Sale," redemption fees are also waived for owners who have lost their pets and want to get them back.

β€œOur team has only two empty kennels for incoming cats, and five empty kennels for incoming dogs,” said Karen Hollish, PACC director of development and marketing. β€œWe are in a critical space crisis and need our community’s help.”

PACC currently has 597 pets at the shelter, including 335 dogs and 262 cats. In addition to the pets housed at the shelter, there are hundreds of pets in foster care who are also waiting for forever homes.

In the days following July 4, the shelter typically takes in more than 100 pets, many of whom escaped during fireworks and were injured by cars, the news release said.

The sale is already underway, with adoption fees waived at the shelter and five local PetSmart adoption locations. A $17 licensing fee will apply to all adult dogs.

The shelter, located at 4000 North Silverbell Road, is open from 12 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
