A 75-year-old man who seriously injured in a Thursday morning car crash died from his injuries later in the day, authorities said.
Anthony Zangara was taken to a local hospitalΒ after his car crashed head-on into a Sahuarita police officer's vehicle,Β said Deputy Cody Gress, a department spokesman.
Pima County Sheriff's deputies received the call about the crash at about 6:30 a.m., in the area of East Old Spanish Trail and South Camino Loma Alta, Gress said.
When deputies arrived, they found two cars with extensive damage blocking traffic on Camino Loma Alta.
Sahuarita Police Lieutenant Matthew McGlone was driving northbound on Camino Loma Alta in his marked vehicle, when a copper-colored Scion hatchback headed southbound drifted across the center lane and struck the officer's car, Gress said.
Zangora was transported to the hospital with serious injuries, and passed away shortly before 6 p.m., Gress said.
McGlone was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and is expected to be fine.
Both men were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash, Gress said.
Sheriff's department traffic investigators are still looking into what caused Zangara to veer into oncoming traffic.
