A pedestrian was killed after being hit by a vehicle this morning in Oro Valley, authorities said.

Oro Valley police received the call shortly after 8 a.m., regarding a pedestrian who had been struck by a car in the area of North First Avenue and East Palisades Road, said department spokeswoman, Lt. Kara Riley.

Detectives learned that the male pedestrian was walking southbound on the sidewalk of First, approaching Palisades, when he was struck by a vehicle, after its driver lost control, according to a department news release.

The vehicle, driven by 38-year-old Joseph Freese, swerved across the median on the northbound lanes, hitting the pedestrian before the car crashed into the desert.

The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene, and Freese was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries, the release said.

Driver impairment is not believed to be a factor in the collision. The investigation is ongoing.

The pedestrian's identity is being withheld until the family can be notified.
