Tucson police are investigating a shooting where a 7-year-old boy was shot in the back.

The shooting happened at an apartment complex in the 6200 block of South Campbell Avenue, near East Bilby Road, on Wednesday afternoon.

The boy was in critical condition and taken to a hospital. He was in surgery late Wednesday but is expected to survive his wounds, said Sgt. Pete Dugan, a spokesman for the Tucson Police Department.

Dugan said the boy and his family were visiting family members who lived at the apartment when the shooting happened inside the residence.

Dugan said a 911 call was received about 4:30 p.m. reporting the shooting. When officers arrived family members were outside the apartment with the wounded boy.

Police officers began administering first aid to the child before paramedics arrived, he said.

He said the investigation was in its early stages and information about what happened was not immediately available.
