Tucson police have identified the 27-year-old man killed in a single-vehicle rollover crash near Davis-Monthan Air Force Base Saturday morning.
At about 1:50 a.m., police attempted to stop a silver 2005 Cadillac CTS for a traffic violation, but the driver refused to stop and fled from officers in the area of East Golf Links and South Craycroft Road, Sgt. Pete Dugan, a Tucson Police Department spokesman, wrote in a news release.
Officers did not pursue the vehicle, the release said.
About 10 minutes later, officers were dispatched to a crash in the area of East Golf Links Road and East Aviation Parkway, and upon arrival, learned that the vehicle involved in the rollover crash was the same vehicle that fled during the traffic stop, the release said.
Paramedics with Rural Metro Fire District transported the driver to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, but on Sunday, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
He has been identified as Gilbert Graeda, the release said.
Traffic detectives have learned that Graeda was driving westbound on Golf Links at a high rate of speed, when he attempted to veer onto East Aviation Parkway and lost control over the vehicle, causing it to roll. Graeda was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the car, the release said.
Excessive speed appears to be a major contributing factor in the crash, the release said.
To date, there have been 13 fatal crashes this year, compared to five for the same time period last year, according to TPD.
