Authorities said a man apparently shot his girlfriend to death before taking his own life in a Catalina Foothills apartment last week.

On Monday, the sheriff’s department identified the two people found dead as Andrew Mora and Nickole Armas, both 27. At about 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Pima County sheriff’s deputies responded to check welfare at a unit within the Skyline Gateway Apartments, 4601 E. Skyline Dr., near North Swan Road, forcing entry through a glass window near the door.

The deputies then forced open a locked bedroom door and found Mora and Armas dead from gunshot wounds.

Detectives found a Walther handgun in Mora’s hand and bullet casings nearby prior to determining Mora killed Armas before taking his own life.

Deputies attempted to make contact with the two earlier in the day after Armas’ sister reported she had not heard from Nickole after trying to call her several times, court documents said.

Deputies checked twice and did not reach anyone inside. At 8:30 p.m., they forced their way inside the apartment.

A neighbor told detectives he believed the couple was arguing days before the incident, the document said. The neighbor told investigators he last saw Armas on Tuesday night when she was walking her dog.

The investigation is ongoing.
