Monsoon rain Wednesday that measured .74 of an inch by the afternoon broke a record of .55 of an inch set on this day in 1912, according to the National Weather Service Tucson.

"It looks like we are done in the Tucson metro area this afternoon, but threats of showers and thunderstorms could occur throughout the night," said Emily French, a meteorologist for the weather service.

"So the new record will not be announced until it is set at midnight," said French.

The Tucson International Airport received .28 of an inch between 2 and 3 p.m. Wednesday, which is in addition to .46 of an inch from this morning between midnight and 7 a.m., French said.

The storm that formed around Davis-Monthan Air Force Base tracked to TIA and doused sections on the south and southwest sides, said French. It then headed toward Three Points and dissipated just west of that community.

Wind gusts were recorded at 60 mph at the airport, said French. She said there were no reports of damage as of 3:37 p.m.

There were reports of hail an inch in diameter northeast of Ryan Airfield, said French. Wind gusts of 60 mph were also recorded near the airfield.

According to Pima County Regional Flood Control District gauges, within the last three hours rainfall measured:

  • Β 1 inch in Arivaca
  • .63 of an inch near Redington Pass
  • .55 of an inch in the Rincon Mountains
