Joe Encinas brings “joy and kindness” to his Safeway store.

What: Ben’s Bells promote kindness and community involvement. Each week a person who makes Tucson better is “belled.”

Last week’s recipient: Joe Encinas.

Nominated by: Jeanne N. Clarke.

Why: For the kindness he shows customers at the Safeway at North Oracle and West Ina Roads. Encinas has worked as a cashier there for years and entertains customers regularly, Clarke wrote in her nomination letter. Not only is he a kind, smiling and funny person to all of his customers, on special occasions he dresses up to give cheer. At Christmas time, Encinas dressed as Santa Claus, played Christmas music, and shouted “Ho, Ho, Ho” regularly. He also rode his bicycle through the Winterhaven Festival of Lights dressed as Santa, wishing visitors a Merry Christmas. For many people, grocery shopping is a chore, but not for the regulars at Safeway. Encinas spreads happiness and fun on a daily basis, being kind to all of his customers, Clarke wrote. “Encinas truly brings joy and kindness to Safeway,” Clarke wrote.
