One person suffered life-threatening injuries after exchanging gunfire with Tucson police officers on Saturday, officials say.

Shortly before 11 a.m., officers conducted a traffic stop on a stolen vehicle with three suspects inside near the 3100 block of East Behan Street, north of South Country Club and East Drexel roads.

The occupants fled from the vehicle as officers approached, leading to a brief chase followed by an exchange of gunfire.

One suspect was taken to a hospital after being struck during the incident, Police Chief Chris Magnus said in a tweet. There were no report of injuries to the other suspects who were detained.Β

"I'm grateful beyond words that our officers are uninjured," Magnus said.

Detectives later recovered an assault rifle and pistol used by the suspects, police said.

The department's Office of Professional Standards is conducting a separate, administrative investigation, which is standard protocol in all officer-involved shootings.
