Chub then, now and in the future
● A year ago:
During the Aspen Fire, biologists and volunteers captured almost 1,000 Gila chub from Sabino Canyon. They used hoop nets similar to lobster traps, and an "electrofisher" that stunned the fish with 450 volts of current.
● Today:
About 600 chub are now being held at Game and Fish's Bubbling Ponds hatchery near Sedona; 200 are at the University of Arizona and another 200 are at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum.
● What's next:
Wildlife officials may eventually release the chub in neighboring Bear Canyon.
