Thomas Murray, with bell, heads the University of Arizona’s New Student Experience.

What: Ben’s Bells promote kindness and community involvement. Each week a person who makes Tucson better is “belled.”

Last week’s recipient: Thomas Murray.

Nominated by: Liz Kelly.

Why: Murray is the director of the University of Arizona’s New Student Experience. Kelly wrote in her nomination letter that Murray is dedicated to helping students succeed. He listens to students’ needs and works to make the university more inclusive, accessible and “kind” for students, Kelly wrote. “He shows them he cares, he listens to their stress, shares his own anecdotes and he advocates on their behalf when it is called for,” she wrote. This year, Murray worked with his supervisors to create the fostering success program at the UA, which serves as an advocate and coordinator for former/current foster youth, emancipated youth and other students with similar backgrounds..
