Library group offers grants to 36 schools
The Friends of the Oro Valley Public Library is providing 36 Tucson Title I schools with special grants of up to $1,000 for school libraries and for reading labs.
This is the fourth year the Friends group has reached throughout the Tucson area to bring new books to the public schools.
Donations from Hughes Federal Credit Union, the Bauman Fund, and anonymous donors support the effort.
Canyon del Oro hosts band competition
Canyon Del Oro High School’s Marching Dorados and 30 high school bands from Southern Arizona will play in an Invitational Band Competition on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the football field of Canyon del Oro High School, 25 W. Calle Concordia, in Oro Valley.
Gates open at 10:30 a.m. Bands will be judged and rated for their performances.
Ticket prices are $5 for adults and $3 for students; children under the age of 5 are free.
Walk & Bike to School Day slated for Friday
Thousands of children will be walking and biking to approximately 50 schools throughout Pima County on Friday, Oct. 27.
The Pima County Department of Transportation Bicycle and Pedestrian Program and the Department of Environmental Quality Clean Air Program sponsor the annual event to encourage active ways for children to get to school and to improve air quality and safety around schools and neighborhoods.
CITY Center hosting free movie at the Loft
CITY Center for Collaborative Learning will host a free screening of “Dream Big: Engineering Our World” at The Loft Cinema on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.
From the Great Wall of China and the world’s tallest buildings, to underwater robots, solar cars and sustainable cities, ‘Dream Big’ celebrates the human ingenuity behind engineering marvels big and small, and reveals the heart that drives engineers to create better lives for people around the world.
The film will be followed by a panel discussion with the audience; panelists include an engineer, educators, a surgeon, a University of Arizona student, and a high school ninth-grader.
Roskruge K-8 receives donation of 300 books
Roskruge K-8 Bilingual Magnet School recently received a book grant for their school library.
The literacy nonprofit Kids Need to Read donated 300 books valued at $2,135.
