Several people have been hospitalized, including two children, after a two-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon near East Irvington Road and South Tucson Boulevard, authorities said.

Irvington Road at Tucson Boulevard is completely shut down from East Walnut Street to the intersection, said Sgt. Pete Dugan, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.

Motorists were asked to avoid the area. It is not known when the travel restrictions will be lifted.

The crash occurred about 3:30 p.m. when a Dodge truck was headed south on Tucson and traveled over the median and struck a Nissan SUV head-on, Dugan said.

Five occupants were in the SUV and two children were taken by Tucson Fire paramedics to a hospital. One was an infant who was in stable condition, and the other was a 10-year-old child who suffered serious injuries, said Dugan. The others in the SUV sustained minor injuries.

The driver of the truck suffered possibly life-threatening injuries and was also taken by paramedics to a hospital, Dugan said.

No further information was immediately available.Β
