The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning in effect through 11 tonight.

The storm is expected to bring showers and snow today - with some blizzard conditions possible in mountain areas - and much lower temperatures. Wind gusts of nearly 40 mph are likely.

The snow level is expected to be about 3,000 feet during the day, dropping to about 2,300 feet by tonight. The weather service says there could be snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches in the valley of the Tucson metro area and 5 to 9 inches in the foothills. Mount Lemmon could get about a foot or more of fresh powder.

The predicted high today in Tucson is 44 to 49 degrees.
