A proposed 4 percent increase to Pima County’s existing sewer user rates and fees in 2017 will be the topic at two public meetings this week, one on Monday, Dec. 12 and the other on Thursday, Dec. 15.

The increase is meant to ensure the county generates the revenue needed to cover its operation, maintenance, and debt expenses while having the appropriate financial reserves, according to a news release from the Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department.

The county hasn’t raised sewer bills since 2013.

“We determined that a 4 percent increase would be a reasonable amount to help us protect critical infrastructure,” John Lynch, chair of the financial sub-committee for the department’s advisory committee, said in the release. “In the coming years, however, we will continue to assess the need for increased revenue.”

The Monday meeting will be held at 6 p.m. in the Pima County Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation facility, 3500 W. River Road. The Thursday meeting will be held at 8 a.m. in the Board of Supervisors Hearing Room, 130 W. Congress St., on the first floor.
