Tucson Fire Department maintenance

The half-cent sales tax increase would help pay for facility upgrades and equipment for the Tucson Fire Department.

Tuesday’s special election to seek approval to raise Tucson’s sales tax by a half-cent is a mail-in ballot election.

Proposition 101 ballots must be received by the city by 7 p.m. Election Day to be counted, and the city has said that ballots should have been mailed back by May 10 to ensure the City Clerk’s Office receives them on time.

If you haven’t mailed in your ballot, the city will have several election sites open Tuesday where residents can drop off their completed mail ballot; bring their mail ballot with them, complete it and drop it in a ballot box; or ask for a replacement ballot. You can also pick up a replacement ballot Monday at the Tucson City Clerk Elections Center, 800 E. 12th St., between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Any registered city voter can receive a replacement ballot upon signing a sworn statement that their original ballot was lost, spoiled, destroyed or not received.

The only issue on the ballot is whether to allow the city to increase its sale tax from 2 cents per $1 to 2Β½ cents per $1. The new tax is expected to raise about $250 million over five years, with the money to be used for road repairs ($100 million) and for facility upgrades and new equipment for the Tucson Police and Fire departments ($150 million). The tax, which the city said would cost the average resident about $3 more per month, would expire in five years.

The ballot locations open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday are:

  • Department of Housing and Community Development, 310 N. Commerce Park Loop.
  • Morris K. Udall Regional Center, 7200 E. Tanque Verde Road.
  • Donna R. Liggins Recreation Center, 2160 N. Sixth Ave.
  • William Clements Recreation Center, 8155 E. Poinciana Drive.
  • El Pueblo Senior Center, 101 W. Irvington Road.
  • Parks and Recreation Administration, Randolph Park, 900 S. Randolph Way.
  • Tucson City Clerk Elections Center, 800 E. 12th St.
