A man fired on Border Patrol agents who returned fire, striking and wounding him Wednesday, May 17, federal authorities said.
No agents were injured in the incident at a checkpoint north of Tombstone.
Shortly before 4 p.m., the man was driving a vehicle north on Arizona 80 into the immigration checkpoint, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials in a tweet.
At the intersection of Arizona 80 and 82, the vehicle collided with traffic barriers at the checkpoint. The checkpoint was closed because of wind conditions, said officials.
The man began shooting at agents at the checkpoint, and agents returned fire and struck the man, said officials.
Authorities gave aid to the wounded man and he was flown by helicopter to a Tucson hospital, officials said.
The FBI, Customs and Border Protection's Office of Professional Responsibility and the Tombstone Marshal's Office are investigating the shooting.Β
