Tucson High quartet to perform here in traveling Beatles musical

The Tucson High Magnet School string quartet will be performing in a touring Beatles musical when it comes to the Fox Theatre next month.

“In My Life — A Musical Theatre Tribute to the Beatles” will be in Tucson on July 28 at 7:30 p.m.

Tucson High’s string quartet will join the professional actors on stage to perform the songs “Eleanor Rigby,” “Yesterday,” “A Day in the Life,” “Hello Goodbye” and “Hey Jude.”

The students who make up Tucson High’s string quartet are Angie Valencia, Roman Rivera, Alison Cutler and Isabel Verdugo. The Beatles show commonly uses local quartets to augment the production while on tour.

Tickets start at $30 and can be purchased online at foxtucson.com as well as by phone at 547-3040, or at the theater box office, 17 W. Congress, between noon and 5 p.m.

Discounts are available for seniors, groups, students and active military.

‘Success’ scholarships

More than a dozen Tucson students have been awarded scholarships to attend colleges and universities around the state.

The College Success Arizona scholarships recipients are:

• Bryan Villalobos, of Amphitheater High School, will attend the University of Arizona.
• Julian Garcia, of Cholla High Magnet School, will attend the UA.
• Natalie Rivera Cardenas, of Desert View High School, will attend Arizona State University.
• Arnoldo Martinez, of Desert View High School, will attend Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.
• Haredo Mohamed, of Desert View High School, will attend Pima Community College
• Abdikadir Tasir, of Desert View High School, will attend the UA.
• Jesus Valenzuela, of Desert View High School, will attend the UA.
• Mana Abdi, of Desert View High School, will attend the UA.
• Gerardo Aguilar, of Desert View High School, will attend the UA.
• Jose Martinez, of Sunnyside High School, will attend ASU.
• Alonso Garcia, of Sunnyside High School, will attend the UA.
• Ilse Morales Duarte, of Sunnyside High School, will attend the UA.
• Marcko Burrola, of Sunnyside High School, will attend the UA.
• Jesus Ruiz, of University High School, will attend the UA.

The scholarships provide up to $6,000 per year for educational expenses for students with high potential. Students also receive specialized mentoring services to help them overcome academic and personal struggles.

College Success Arizona is a not-for-profit organization working to increase the postsecondary attainment rate of students in Arizona, particularly for those who otherwise would not be able to attend or graduate.
