A dust storm in the Picacho Peak area caused two crashes and temporarily closed Interstate 10 in both directions.

The interstate re-opened shortly before 5 p.m., said Bart Graves, and Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman.

The crashes occurred shortly after 3 p.m. when the dust storm limited visibility on both the eastbound and westbound lanes, said Graves.

Both crashes were in the eastbound lanes.

The first collision involved three vehicles, and all the vehicles ended up on the median, said Graves. He said there were injuries in the crash, but he did not have details about whether anyone needed to be transported to a hospital.

In the second crash, four vehicles were involved and there were no injuries. The vehicles ended up on the shoulder of the interstate.

Both crashes caused rear-end chain reactions, said Graves.

The westbound lanes on the interstate were shut down because of zero visibility, and the eastbound lanes were shut down so that medical crews and tow trucks could get to the crash sites, Graves said.
