Sonora and federal authorities busted a synthetic drug lab and arrested nine suspects while on patrol north of Puerto Peñasco last weekend.

Around 11 p.m. on March 15, a joint tactical operation by the Mexican National Guard, the Army and AMIC — the criminal investigative arm of the Sonora Attorney General’s office — noticed a “suspicious warehouse” near kilometer 52 of the highway between Sonoyta and Puerto Peñasco, according to a news release from the Sonora AG’s office.

Several suspects fled as authorities approached, but were pursued and captured. The suspects were identified only by their first names, and they range in age from 21 to 57. All were originally from the Mexican states of Sinaloa or Durango, the release said.

The lab was producing methamphetamine, according to a spokesman for the Sonora AG’s office.

Authorities found specialized equipment for the production of synthetic narcotics on the property, as well as a 5.56x45-caliber rifle with two loaded magazines and a white 2023 GMC Sierra pickup truck, which had been reported stolen in the U.S. The federal public prosecutor’s office in Sonoyta will continue the investigation, the release said.

The Sonora AG’s office “reaffirms its strong commitment to continue carrying out coordinated actions to maintain the safety and peace of Sonoran families,” the release said.
