Tucson International Airport says it is preparing to handle about 259,000 passengers the holiday season.

The busiest day at TIA is expected to be Dec. 29, with an an anticipated 16,000 travelers, the airport said in a news release.

The airport says it expect to serve about 6% more passengers this year compared to the same period last year. That’s about 13,600 travelers per day from Dec. 18 through Jan. 5.

Nonstop destinations with the largest year-over-year capacity gains include: Dallas, Denver, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle-Tacoma, Minneapolis/St. Paul and Portland, the release said.

Tucson International Airport says it expects to handle about 13,600 travelers per day from Dec. 18 through Jan. 5.

TIA has 68 daily departures connecting travelers to nearly 400 destinations around the world with just one stop.

Travelers heading home after the Thanksgiving this year set a record.

The Transportation Security Administration said that on the Sunday after Thanksgiving it handled 3.09 million travelers, according to the Associated Press.

That broke the previous record by about 74,000 people.

The previous record was set on July 7, also a Sunday after a holiday, the AP reported.
