Kiwanis de Amigos: Kiwanis de Amigos has been selected as a top-10 finalist for the 2024 Kiwanis International Signature Project Contest. Competing as a Group 1 club with fewer than 25 members, the club was one of 10 selected from 525 entries from around the world. Winners will be announced in Denver in July.
As its signature project, Kiwanis de Amigos submitted the track and field event for middle school kids they have been running since 2003 in Tucson. The Kiwanis de Amigos Relays, held at the University of Arizona Drachman Track and Field stadium, welcomes young athletes from schools all over Southern Arizona. Thousands of boys and girls have competed in a real-world track atmosphere with professional officials, electronic timing and individual medals and team trophies.
Amistades: Amistades, Inc., a Latino-led, Latino-serving nonprofit committed to race and equity issues, has been awarded $500,000 over three years from the EPA’s Environmental Justice Collaborative Problem-Solving Cooperative Agreement Program.
The funding will support Amistades’ Justicia Juntos (Justice Together) initiative that aims to increase heat resiliency in disproportionately affected, Latino-dominant communities in Tucson with the development of community-driven projects that tackle climate justice challenges.
Amistades recently expanded its areas of focus to include environmental justice and this is its first federally-funded climate action initiative.
With the City of Tucson, Chispa Arizona and The Arizona Center For Empowerment, the collaborative effort will develop a climate coalition that centers on families to learn from their stories about heat exposure, environmental needs and everyday living.
Justicia Juntos will also set the stage to integrate two climate resilience hubs to provide safe spaces for residents to cool down, build connections and access resources.
