Southeast Tucson residents will soon have a new hospital option with the completion of Tucson Medical Center Rincon.

After three phases of construction starting in 2017, TMC Health celebrated completion of the final phase with a ribbon-cutting for the new hospital at 5755 S. Houghton Road, near East Drexel Road, on Wednesday.

Tucson Medical Center Rincon is a 60-bed hospital including medical and facilities and maternity beds, in addition to four operating rooms.

Already open after the first two phases of construction are a medical office building with primary care, imaging and urgent care, along with an ambulatory surgery center that opened last year.

The final phase of construction, launched in July 2022 and celebrated Wednesday, added a new 132,284-square-foot, 60-bed hospital, including medical and facilities and maternity beds, in addition to four operating rooms.

The hospital is expected to open sometime in March, pending required regulatory approvals, TMC said.

“As we integrate an ambulatory surgery center, medical offices, TMCOne primary care providers, an urgent care facility, and on-site specialty services with the new hospital, this allows a fast-growing community to have the very best medical attention available close to home,” Tucson Medical Center CEO Mimi Coomler said.

TMC Health also announced the appointment of Heather Beck, a registered nurse with a nursing master’s degree, as the administrator of Tucson Medical Center Rincon.

Over a 20-year career, Beck has held executive roles with HCA Healthcare, Steward Healthcare and Catholic Health Initiatives, TMC said.

TMC is hiring for a wide range of positions at the Rincon campus. For more information, go to tmcaz.com/TMCRinconJobs.

While partnering on a virtual reality training scenario, Ash Watkins, left, clinical trainer, and Shane Elfering, registered nurse, get set up for a virtual reality training scenario at Tucson Medical Center in Tucson, Ariz. on June 27, 2022. TMC, in partnership with 3lbXR, is piloting a new virtual realty training program for nurses, patient care technicians and environmental services staff aimed at addressing high-risk and problematic tasks as well as work responsibilities in a health care setting.
