Humberto Lopez chats with a few guests during a ceremony naming the new HSLopez School of Business Analytics at the University of Arizona’s Eller College of Management on Thursday.

A naming ceremony for the University of Arizona’s HSLopez School of Business Analytics was held Thursday, Jan. 18.

The development of the school, part of the Eller College of Management, is due in large part to a $9 million donation from UA alum Humberto Lopez and his wife, Czarina.

The HSLopez School of Business Analytics aims to utilize data to shape the future of business, developing data-driven decision-makers.

Lopez received a degree in accounting in 1969 from the Eller College, then known as the UA School of Business and Public Administration. He’d later go on to launch his own real estate investment company.

By 1975, Lopez formed HSL Properties, with investments in California, Arizona, Colorado, Texas, New Mexico and Georgia, according to the HSLopez Family Foundation website. His portfolio includes apartments throughout Southern Arizona and Tucson-area hotels.

Humberto Lopez and his wife, Czarina, donated $9 million to help fund the establishment of the HSLopez School of Business Analytics.

Lopez’s philanthropic relationship with the UA goes back to 1980 when he made a donation of $1,000 to the Arizona Health Sciences Center. Since then, Lopez and his wife have donated $18 million to support various university causes, a news release said.

“We are extremely grateful to have the tremendous support of Humberto and Czarina Lopez, whose impact on our programs and the entire university cannot be overstated,” said Karthik Kannan, dean of the Eller College of Management. “Thanks to their ongoing contributions, we have been able to provide countless wonderful opportunities for our students and faculty and can continue to do so well into the future. We could not be more thankful for their generous donations and partnership.”
