A monsoon storm moving through Tucson Wednesday afternoon produced heavy rain and left more than 6,000 Tucson Electric Power Co. customers without power.

By late Wednesday evening, busy crews restored power to all customers affected.

The storm dropped up to an inch of rain in the center of Tucson, with downtown, Reid Park and University of Arizona areas hardest hit.

Power outages were reported throughout the metropolitan area, according to the TEP outage map.

The downpour also flooded the West Speedway underpass on the east-side of Interstate 10. Authorities said the water is unable to drain and Speedway from I-10 to North Stone Avenue will remain closed until 5 a.m. Thursday, July 20.

Street flooding was reported throughout the city, and motorists were advised to drive with caution. Numerous trees were reported down.

Marana also was pounded by the storm, which caused a large tree to come down on Interstate 10 near Tangerine Road, said Sgt. Chris Warren, a Marana Police Department spokesman.

Officers removed the tree from the interstate, which was causing a traffic hazard in the eastbound lane, said Warren. He said heavy rain caused poor visibility in the area.

Twin Peaks and Sanders roads were closed due to flooding. Motorists had to use alternate routes.

The current pattern of afternoon and evening thunderstorms was expected to continue through at least this weekend, along with the below normal high temperatures.

While monsoon season took a while to get going, it's been more than productive in terms of rainfall. The National Weather Service in Tucson reports that parts of Pima County have already exceeded by 400 percent the normal precipitation total for the first 18 days of the month.
